The "Basement" Years
MCR Services started in September 1994 as a partnership between Wade F. Hungerford and a friend from Columbus State. After working at other construction firms, they wanted to create a dynamic company with the mission of removing the mystery from the building process. They believed that the construction experience had to be transparent and make sense to everyone involved.
On January 3, 1995, the partnership was officially incorporated and began securing work from their first offices. Any new business must build on good “foundations” and we were no different: Our first headquarters were in the basement of Wade’s old home near German Village. One of the first projects undertaken by the fledgling company was the upgrade of the existing limestone cellar into a functional, comfortable home office—albeit one prone to seasonal flooding and playful visits by the Hungerford’s two Jack Russell Terriers.
The “Basement" Years saw two additional upgrades of the space, further “intrusions” into the Hungerford home and long working hours. The occasional home-cooked meal by Wade’s wife, Robin, was a welcome perk for the first couple employees.
Moving Away From Home
By late 1996, we had outgrown the basement, co-opted the garage and started taking over the rest of the house. In order to preserve domestic tranquility—and Wade’s marriage—we moved into a small business condo near Franklin University and began expansion.
