    The Foodservice Market

    30 Projects; 15 Clients—and Growing

A developing market for MCR Services is the Foodservice industry, which includes full-service restaurants, cafés, commercial kitchens and catering facilities.

During the past few years, retail Meal Preparation Centers have become popular. We have worked with two different clients to develop their facilities and more are in the works as additional franchises are awarded.

We’ve worked on thirty Foodservice projects for 15 different customers—including Campus Partners in the OSU South Campus redevelopment effort. We have also worked with Pacific Bells, the Graystone Winery and Ohio Dominican University.

Foodservice projects can be simple remodeling or updated finishes for restaurants as well as complete “scrape-and-rebuilds” of fast-food establishments. We’ve also delivered complete design and construction services on unimproved sites.

Value Engineering is a strategy to find and locate cost saving opportunities, where we can select and schedule materials that meet the design criteria, but at a better labor or material cost than the architect had originally anticipated. Sometimes, small layout changes or site modifications can also have a large impact on the bottom line. Full-service General Contracting gives our customers greater value.

During construction, a primary concern is to keep disruptions to a minimum so that the business can continue operations. If a temporary closing is mandated or we are establishing a new facility for the Owners, the goal is completing the work and establishing full operation as quickly as possible. Like our Medical projects, proper hygiene and sanitation are vital for this type of work; extra precautions have to be taken—before, during and after construction.

We have divided the Foodservice market into three components:

    • Restaurants
    • Cafés
    • Kitchens

    Restaurants

From Fine Dining to Quick Vittles: Everyone Needs to Eat

Establishing relationships within the Restaurant industry is a lot like becoming recognized as a builder in the Medical community. The customers are used to "building" on reputation and past work and a general contractor has to earn its stripes.

During our professional growth, we formed good relationships with existing and new clients and this gave us the opportunity for interesting projects, a couple of which are featured below:

    Cafés

A Relaxing Pit-Stop—and Customized Construction Services

Cafés pose their own set of construction challenges and solutions. There is often limited "elbow room" and staging area and the work needs to be done in busy thoroughfares or shopping centers. Keeping an existing business in operation—or limiting the inconvenience to surrounding businesses—is a high priority. Some of these projects are listed below:

    • Cornerstone Coffee Downtown

    • Inta-Juice at South Campus Gateway

    • Get Wired Internet Café

    Meal Preparation Centers and Catering

A growing niche in the Foodservice Market is Meal Prep Centers. We were asked to help design and build two storefront meal centers, both in Dublin, Ohio. MCR Services has also performed renovations for new catering kitchen facilities, university cafeterias and a "Food Lab" at OSU.

The two meal prep centers—both performed on fast-tracked schedules—are profiled in the following links:
