Grange Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1935—during the height of the Great Depression. They continue to offer insurance protection for home, automobile and business, as well as life insurance and other financial products & services.
Their headquarters in Columbus, constructed in 1976, is a prominent landmark in the German Village / Brewery District area. They maintain an historic “corporate atelier” for visitors nearby, but it was badly outdated and in need of restoration—and lots of TLC.
Challenges
Run-Down & Badly Outdated Lodgings
MCR faced an accelerated schedule on this high-end project on Sycamore Street in German Village. This ten-suite, private hotel in German Village, owned by Grange Insurance, houses visiting executives and trainees, often for extended stays. MCR faced some interesting challenges:
Tight working conditions and small exterior staging area with lots of snow during the work
All suites undergoing phased restorations simultaneously
The building underwent a complete remodel in only two months
Significant amounts of architectural trim work were added to the suites, including new chair rail, crown molding and other trim added to enhance the suites’ appearance—a true upgrade over the original woodwork
Exacting painting and staining of the new woodwork
New vinyl wallcoverings throughout
New carpeting, floor coverings & refinished wood floors
New kitchenettes with updated cabinetry
New bathrooms and showers
Built-ins for the convenience of the guests
Added electrical outlets & lighting to improve the serviceability of the lodgings
Results
An Upscale Showplace Once Again
After the interior restoration work had been completed, the client requested that the exterior of the building be addressed as well. These subsequent exterior projects included extensive power-washing and painting for instant curb-appeal of the restored hotel.
The interiors are now renovated to exacting standards, preserving their old-world detailing, including careful matching and repair of existing hardwood flooring and trim. Our clients at Grange Mutual were delighted with the results.
